A state funeral for Chad President Idriss D\u00e9by Itno will take place on Friday, military officials announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
It will be held in the capital N\u2019Djamena. D\u00e9by will be buried in his native region in the east of Chad.<\/p>\n
The military council that took over after D\u00e9by\u2019s death said the funeral will take place\u00a0\u201cin the presence of heads of state and government of friendly countries\u201d.<\/p>\n
D\u00e9by, 68, died of wounds sustained on the frontline during fighting against rebels in the country\u2019s north-west.<\/p>\n
The news of his death came a day after D\u00e9by, who came to power in a rebellion in 1990 and was one of Africa\u2019s longest-ruling leaders, won a sixth term, as per provisional results released on Monday. D\u00e9by took 79.3% of the vote in the April 11 presidential election, according to the Chadian national electoral commission.<\/p>\n
Deby\u2019s son, the\u00a0four-star General Mahamat Kaka, otherwise known as Mahamat Idriss D\u00e9by Itno, will be the\u00a0 interim head of state.<\/p>\n
The 37-year-old will head an 18-month transitional council made up of military officers, Azem Bermendao Agouna, an army spokesman, said in a television broadcast. \u201cFree and transparent\u201d elections will be held when the transitional period is over.<\/p>\n
Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari said in a statement released on Tuesday that he was \u201cdeeply shocked and devastated\u201d by the sudden death of D\u00e9by, whom he described as \u201ca friend of Nigeria\u201d.<\/p>\n
African Union Moussa Faki Mahamat, a former Chadian prime minister, tweeted that he was saddened by D\u00e9by\u2019s death and sent his condolences to his family.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is with great dismay and deep emotion that I learnt of the death today of President Idriss D\u00e9by Itno,\u201d said Faki, who was Chad\u2019s prime minister from 2003 to 2005 and his foreign minister from 2008 – 2017.<\/p>\n
He called D\u00e9by a \u201cgreat statesman and recognised military leader.\u201d.<\/p>\n
Messages of condolences poured in from around the world, including from France, the United States, the European Union, the United Nations, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Israel.<\/p>\n
