{"id":14416,"date":"2021-05-03T06:59:58","date_gmt":"2021-05-03T06:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ndarason.com\/?p=14416"},"modified":"2021-05-03T06:59:58","modified_gmt":"2021-05-03T06:59:58","slug":"after-vicious-gunfights-iswap-insurgents-hand-out-cash-to-astonished-geidam-residents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ndarason.com\/en\/after-vicious-gunfights-iswap-insurgents-hand-out-cash-to-astonished-geidam-residents\/","title":{"rendered":"After vicious gunfights, ISWAP insurgents hand out cash to astonished Geidam residents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an astonishing move and after a deadly and drawn-out battle in Geidam \u2013 which began last Friday and ended on Wednesday \u2212 members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (<em>ISWAP<\/em>) gave 20,000 naira to each person they came across in the town.<\/p>\n<p>A security agent, who asked to remain anonymous, \u00a0told RNI reporter Lawan Bukar Maigana that the insurgents handed out money to residents on Wednesday \u2013 when the fighting stopped \u2212 but they did not ask them to join ISWAP.<\/p>\n<p>He said residents were \u201castonished and confounded\u201d but they took the money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one knows why they gave people money,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Although they did not force anyone to join, the ISWAP members told residents that anyone who wanted to join the group would be welcomed.<\/p>\n<p>They handed out letters, containing the group\u2019s rules, to residents.<\/p>\n<p>The ISWAP fighters stormed the town on Friday. They arrived in eight trucks \u2212 fitted with machine guns \u2212 just as Geidam residents were preparing to break the Ramadan fast.<\/p>\n<p>They headed to the military base where vicious gunfights began.<\/p>\n<p>There were reports that a number of soldiers died in the attack but these could not be confirmed. The number of insurgents killed was also unknown.<\/p>\n<p>A town administrator said 11 residents were killed when a projectile hit two adjoining homes.<\/p>\n<p>A resident, who asked to remain anonymous, confirmed the deaths, saying six occupants of one house and five from the other were killed.<\/p>\n<p>According to an aid agency, wounded residents and soldiers were receiving treatment at a government health facility.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of residents managed to flee to neighbouring towns and villages, but some remained trapped in the town.
