Troops of Operation HADIN KAI within the period under review carried out extensive land and air operations across the theatre. Notably, on 12 November 2021, the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI decimated BHT\/ISWAP terrorist elements in offensive air strikes in a location within Baga near the Lake Chad. This was achieved on the heels of credible intelligence and after careful aerial surveillance revealed the gathering of some key members and fighters of the terrorists who arrived the location aboard several boats. Consequently, the theatre commander dispatched a force package of NAF\u2019s platforms to strike the location in successive turns, which led to the neutralization of scores of their key members and fighters of the insurgents. Similarly, on 13 November 2021, own troops in a coordinated ground and air attacks, repelled terrorists\u2019 attack on troops at Askira Uba in Borno State. During the counter-offensive operation, over 50 of the terrorists were neutralized and several of their combat equipment, including gun trucks and other weapons were destroyed. Also, their fighting vehicles as well as large caches of arms and ammunition were recovered during the encounter. However, some of our gallant officers and soldiers paid the supreme prize.<\/p>\n

More Boko Haram fighters have surrendered on Wednesday morning at Gwoza as Nigerian troops battle ISWAP terrorists in Malam Fatori this evening. Despite ISWAP move to stop the move, Commanders of Boko Haram and their members have surrendered with their weapons to the troops in Gwoza axis. A military intelligence operative told PRNigeria that more former Boko Haram members are expected to surrender before the end of the year. \u201cSome former Boko Haram Commanders and their members escaped from Jaje area of Sambisa forest and voluntarily surrendered to Operation Hadin Kai troops of 192 Battalion deployed at Gwoza-Limankara road in Borno State. \u201cMost of them were forcefully conscripted into the terror group against their will while they were very young. \u201cSo far more than 17,000 members of Boko Haram have surrendered despite all efforts of ISWAP to stop the process,\u201d the officer said.<\/p>\n

Insurgents in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State have been forcing parents to withdraw their children from schools and flouting government\u2019s orders. On the other hand, bandits have resorted to burning of farm produce in the communities because farmers reportedly refused to pay the tax imposed on them. The Secretary to the State Government, Ahmed Ibrahim Matane, disclosed this on Tuesday while giving a security update in Minna, the state capital. He said these things were happening in Kwaki, Kusaso, Kawure, Chikuba, Kurebe, Madaka, Farin-Dutse, Falali and Ibbru communities. Matane said, \u201cThey are the areas we believe the operations seem to resemble those of Boko Haram and ISWAP because these people came and tried to align with communities telling them that they need to cooperate with them, so that they would be free; they would not touch them.<\/p>\n

A breakaway group of the\u00a0Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP)<\/a>\u00a0and Boko Haram terrorists are establishing camps in Niger State, the state government has said. The Secretary to the state government, Ahmed Matane, raised the alarn at a press conference in Minna on Tuesday. Mr Matane said armed bandits were aligning with insurgents to indoctrinate residents in some communities in Shiroro Local Government Area. The group has been preaching a strict Islamic ideology and banning women from going to conventional schools. The official identified some of the communities visited by the armed groups as Shukuba, Koki, Kusare, and Madaka.<\/p>\n

Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Saturday, Nov. 20, evening launched an attack on the\u00a0northeastern<\/a>\u00a0town of Marte, located near the shores of Lake Chad. HumAngle understands that the security situation in the remote town is still fluid, with details remaining sketchy as of the time of filing this report. However, sources said the terrorists entered the besieged town around 5:30 pm on Saturday and stayed there till 2 am Sunday.\u00a0They also looted hospital supplies and loaded them in a confiscated pick up van, burnt down a house occupied by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).\u00a0There are also unconfirmed reports that the fighters have abducted some individuals linked to the state while they assured the rest of the residents of their safety.\u00a0Marte is one of the high-risk areas of Borno State inaccessible to humanitarian actors.\u00a0The Nigerian military contingent in the area is stationed at the Lake Chad Basin quarters in New Marte.<\/p>\n

Boko Haram has released videos in which they paraded four men abducted by the terrorists from different locations in the Northeast region of Nigeria. In the short video clips obtained by\u00a0PREMIUM TIMES<\/a>, the victims stated their names, where they work, the date they were abducted and the location. One of the victims, who introduced himself as Zakaria Azirkime, said he is a staff of UNICEF and was abducted on the Maiduguri-Damboa road. Two others said they were abducted between Buratai and Buni Yadi, while the fourth, a staff of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said he was travelling from Kano to Maiduguri when he was abducted. PREMIUM TIMES<\/a>\u00a0observed that the terrorists did not ask the victims to appeal to family members, government or their employers as usually do in previous videos where victims were given such opportunities.<\/p>\n

The Nigerian military in the early hours of Friday, Nov. 19, pushed back an Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) incursion into Damboa area in Nigeria\u2019s\u00a0northeastern\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0State of Borno.<\/p>\n

Damboa is located in Southern Borno and about 86 km from Maiduguri, the state capital. The town is also situated close to the dreaded Alagarno and Sambisa forest general areas where insurgents operate.\u00a0HumAngle has learned that around 6 a.m. ISWAP insurgents attacked the military facility in Damboa but met stiff resistance that led to killing several attackers and withdrawal of the assault.\u00a0In October, ISWAP insurgents in gun trucks and improvised armoured vehicles burnt the outposts of the Nigerian Mobile Police and Civilian Joint Task Force. On Saturday, ISWAP conducted a raid in Askira about 63 km from Damboa, destroying a telecommunication mast, buildings and vehicles, and looting food supplies.\u00a0The terror group also targeted the reinforcements contingent from Chibok resulting in the death of an Army Brigadier General, Dzarma Zirkusu and three soldiers.<\/p>\n

The Air Task Force of Operation Hadin Kai has eliminated tax collectors of the Islamic State of West Africa Province, ISWAP, in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, PRNigeria reports. It also gathered that the tax collectors, who always moved in groups, were sighted and targeted at different locations while mounting roadblocks to collect taxes and levies from commuters and merchants in the town. A security operative told PRNigeria that, \u201cThe airstrike was conducted at Tumbum Kanta and Mangari, close to Baga in Kukawa local government Area of Borno State. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t ascertain the exact figure of the terrorists killed, but they are more than a dozen.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Force Commander (FC), Multinational Joint Taskforce (MNJTF), Major General Abdul Khalifah Ibrahim played host to a joint delegation from the French Military Intelligence led by Vice Admiral Denis Bertrand and another from United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) led by Brigadier General Rose Keravuori. While receiving the delegations on 20 November 2021 at the HQ MNJTF, N\u2019Djamena Chad, the FC expressed gratitude and appreciation for the privilege of hosting the two delegations from strategic partners. He commended the stabilization roles of the US and France forces, most especially in African affairs. During his remarks, General Ibrahim traced the immediate and remote causes of the Boko Haram terrorism in the Lake Chad region, which eventually necessitated the re-operationalisation of the Force in 2015. He said, the MNJTF serves as a regional unifying force to tackle the menace of BHT\/ISWAP insurgents, hence it is a unique military outfit. Speaking further, he urged the strategic partners to explore more ways of supporting the MNJTF to surmount some difficulties in its efforts to achieve its mandates.<\/p>\n

Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State has said all the governors in Nigeria are helpless in terms of protecting the lives and property of citizens. Speaking after Ambazonia fighters from Cameroon invaded a village in Taraba and killed 11 persons, including the monarch, the governor said there is nothing his administration could have done to prevent the attack since he does not control security agencies. The governor said before the incident, he had complained to the federal government and the military about the threat posed by the group.<\/a> Adding that if had powers to control the police, he would have deployed the police in the community, he also added that there is need for state police. Ishaku spoke in an interview with Channels Television.<\/p>\n

Research has shown why women\u00a0join<\/a>\u00a0violent extremist groups in Africa, but much less attention is given to those who leave or do not enlist at all. What makes some women resist recruitment? And why do those who join sometimes disengage? The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) has recently\u00a0explored<\/a>\u00a0the circumstances that allowed women to reject or cut ties with Boko Haram in Niger\u2019s Diffa region and Katiba Macina in Mali\u2019s Mopti and S\u00e9gou regions. Understanding these factors is key to women\u2019s safety. It will prevent their association with armed groups and reduce their exposure to extremist violence. In Mali and Niger, women have mostly escaped recruitment by fleeing areas where the groups are active. Some end up in\u00a0camps<\/a>\u00a0for internally displaced persons, while others take refuge with relatives who live far away or send their children to family members in safer parts of the country. Women interviewed in Niger took refuge there after escaping areas occupied or under attack by Boko Haram in Nigeria. Those who did not flee avoided places where the groups were active and refrained from publicly criticising them. Interviewees said terror groups often targeted people who openly opposed them. Others said they knew of the group\u2019s activities in their area but did not encounter them. Some women in Niger said their knowledge of Islam and the Qur\u2019an stopped them from joining Boko Haram. In Mali too, women said they were not convinced by Katiba Macina\u2019s religious discourse and could deconstruct and identify inconsistencies in recruiters\u2019 rhetoric. This means that governments should invest in girls\u2019 education from an early age \u2013 including religious education \u2013 and remove the many socio-cultural, religious and security barriers that obstruct their access.<\/p>\n

A non- political advocacy group, the Security Assessment Group (SAG) has commended the leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) under the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, for continuously re-emphasing the imperatives of joint operations among in the military. The group said its assessment revealed that the enhanced synergy has proved successful in counter-insurgency, anti-banditry and other security operations embarked by the military across the country. The group in a press release on Wednesday signed by the Convener, Bryan Moses, said that recent successes recorded by the Armed Forces of Nigeria in the war against insurgency justified Gen. Irabor\u2019s emphasis on synergy. Gen. Irabor had on Tuesday while delivering the graduation lecture for participants of Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) Course 5-2021, titled, \u201cEnhancing Jointness in Operations in the Armed Forces of Nigeria; My Perspective\u201d, stated that no single arm of the military had been able to single handedly and successfully prosecuted wars and win anywhere in the world, hence the need for operational \u2018jointness\u2019 among the services.<\/p>\n

The registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Olusegun Ajiboye, has suggested the deployment of officials of the\u00a0Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)<\/a>\u00a0to schools against the rising wave of insecurity in the country and the violent attacks on schools.<\/p>\n

Mr Ajiboye suggested this on Wednesday while taking part as a guest at the third edition of \u201cThe Dialogue,\u201d a virtual interactive stakeholders\u2019 engagement initiative of PREMIUM TIMES in partnership with Strictly Speaking, a media and English Language training organisation led by a veteran broadcaster, Bimbo Oloyede. The first series episodes of the initiative, which focuses on basic education, is sponsored by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) as part of its Regulatory Monitoring Project (REMOP) on basic education in Nigeria. Mr Ajiboye, who informed the audience of the ongoing efforts of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to develop a curriculum for schools on security studies, also emphasised the need for martial arts training for teachers and students across Nigeria for personal safety and defense.<\/p>\n

Hunger remains a major plight facing most IDPs in Borno State. And they are blaming it on corrupt camp leaders whom they allege usually divert the food and other palliative donations to them by NGOs. Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Borno State,\u00a0Northeast Nigeria<\/a>, recently bemoaned how the conduct of local officials has exacerbated food scarcity and hunger in their camps. The IDPs insisted that the prime suspects in the illicit diversion of food and related relief items are the local camp officials. They, however, suggested that strict regulations and monitoring by the government can effectively mitigate such low-level theft. The IDPs listed issues like \u201cgodfatherism, nepotism, and ghost IDP\u201d syndrome as some of the reasons there has been insufficient food for them in the camps. Mukhtari Abubakar, a 29-year-old IDP from Mafa Local Government Area (LGA), told HumAngle that \u201cthere is wild corruption going on in this camp, Muna Albadawi, and you would be shocked to know that it is being perpetrated by our fellow camp members.\u201d \u201cWe don\u2019t have enough support for food here because the monthly supply by SEMA has ceased and what the NGO people normally bring here are grossly inadequate and unstable. And whenever the little support comes, the local officials appointed as Bulamas [village heads] would hijack it while pretending to help in the distribution.\u201d The IDPs said their local chiefs have become so powerful that they could frustrate any NGO that brings palliative to the camp from distributing the same to the IDPs unless they go through them.<\/p>\n

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Maiduguri, have vacated their camps, ahead of the Nov.30, dateline for the closure of all Displaced Persons camps by the Borno Government. A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who visited some camps on Wednesday, reports that most of them have been deserted by the displaced persons. NAN gathered that the state government had on Saturday provided cash and food items to the IDPs ahead of the planned closure of the camps, to enable them move to their respective homes. Some of the IDPs from Gwoza, Monguno and Guzamala Local Government Areas (NAN) who spoke with NAN in Maiduguri said that household heads were given N100, 000 each, while housewives were given NGN50,000 each to facilitate their home return. Mr Mustafa Gubio, the state\u2019s Commissioner for Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement, said the development was part of government commitment to close all IDP camps in Maiduguri in line with its resettlement programme. Gubio said that the IDPs from Bakassi camp numbering about 7000 were expected to return to their LGAs headquarters from where they would proceed to their villages after necessary clearance. \u201cThe resettlement is being done in a dignified way in line with Kampala Convention,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
