The mothers and wives of disappeared and missing young men in\u00a0Maiduguri have observed the Eighth\u00a0Anniversary of the Giwa Barracks attacks in broad daylight on 14 March 2014 by Jam\u0101\u2019at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da\u2019wati Wa\u2019l-Jih\u0101d (JAS), commonly referred\u00a0to as Boko Haram.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of thousands of men and boys have been arrested\u00a0by the military\u00a0according to Allamin Foundation for Peace and Development n Maiduguri and surrounding\u00a0towns in Borno state northeastern Nigeria since 2011, allegedly\u00a0for being members of Boko Haram. Many\u00a0have gone missing or are\u00a0feared to have died\u00a0while in Giwa Barracks – a notorious detention facility in Maiduguri.<\/p>\n
On the 14th of March 2014, JAS broke into Giwa Barracks\u00a0and freed their members.<\/p>\n
Amnesty\u00a0International said 600 people were killed by the Nigerian army within and outside the barracks shortly after the attack by JAS – allegations always denied\u00a0by the military.<\/p>\n
In its 2016 report, Amnesty described Giwa Barracks as a “place of death” and called for its immediate\u00a0closure.<\/p>\n
The military said the killings by the military within and outside the barracks during and after the attack would be investigated, but eight years on, there still neither information nor justice for the survivors or for the victims\u2019 relation.<\/p>\n
