{"id":52865,"date":"2024-08-20T11:23:28","date_gmt":"2024-08-20T09:23:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ndarason.com\/en\/?p=52865"},"modified":"2024-08-20T11:23:28","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T09:23:28","slug":"jas-deputy-commander-surrenders-to-multinational-joint-task-force-troops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ndarason.com\/en\/jas-deputy-commander-surrenders-to-multinational-joint-task-force-troops\/","title":{"rendered":"JAS deputy commander surrenders to Multinational Joint Task Force troops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>In a \u2018significant development\u2019 a deputy commander of the Jam\u0101\u2019at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da\u2019way Wa\u2019l-Jih\u0101d gives himself up to MNJTF troops at Cross Kauwa in Kukawa, Borno State.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A high-ranking member of the Jam\u0101\u2019at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da\u2019way Wa\u2019l-Jih\u0101d (JAS) \u2013 more commonly referred to as Boko Haram \u2013 has surrendered to the troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).<\/p>\n<p>Awana Alhaji Mele Keremi, a deputy commander of the insurgent group, gave himself up to the troops at Cross Kauwa in the Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State in Nigeria\u2019s northeast.<\/p>\n<p>Cross Kauwa is on the shores of Lake Chad, more than 200km from the state capital, Maiduguri, in the far northern part of Borno.<\/p>\n<p>Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the chief military information officer, made the disclosure in a statement issued from the MNJTF\u2019s headquarters in N\u2019Djamena in Chad on Monday, August 19.<\/p>\n<p>He described Keremi\u2019s surrender as a \u201csignificant development\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said Keremi served as \u201cthe right-hand man to a notorious Boko Haram commander\u201d. He did not name the commander.<\/p>\n<p>Osoba said that during interrogation, Keremi provided valuable intelligence to authorities, confessing to his involvement in \u201cnumerous terrorist operations\u201d along the Monguno-Baga axis, a region that has seen some of the most intense conflicts between JAS insurgents and Nigerian military forces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a related development, MNJTF troops also welcomed Babagoni Modu and a family of eight who escaped from a Boko Haram camp in Marte. Modu, a former member of the terrorist group, cited his disillusionment with their violent activities as the reason for his escape,\u201d Osoba said.<\/p>\n<p>The family \u2013 comprising two women, four men and two children \u2013 shared the harrowing experiences they endured at the hands of the insurgents before their daring escape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimultaneously, MNJTF troops detected and safely detonated multiple improvised explosive devices [IEDs] in Cross Kauwa, preventing harm to civilians and infrastructure in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Osoba said the discovery and detonation of the IEDs highlighted \u201cthe vigilance and effectiveness of the troops in countering the threat posed by Boko Haram and ISWAP [Islamic State West Africa Province] insurgents\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese recent developments underscore the commitment of the MNJTF to combat terrorism and safeguard the Lake Chad region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe surrender of a high-ranking Boko Haram figure and the successful disposal of explosive devices represent significant victories in the ongoing campaign against terrorism in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SHETTIMA LAWAN MONGUNO<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a \u2018significant development\u2019 a deputy commander of the Jam\u0101\u2019at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da\u2019way Wa\u2019l-Jih\u0101d gives himself up to MNJTF troops at Cross Kauwa in Kukawa, Borno State.
