{"id":53235,"date":"2025-01-13T17:00:13","date_gmt":"2025-01-13T16:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ndarason.com\/en\/?p=53235"},"modified":"2025-01-13T17:00:13","modified_gmt":"2025-01-13T16:00:13","slug":"track-and-obliterate-terrorists-borno-state-governor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ndarason.com\/en\/track-and-obliterate-terrorists-borno-state-governor\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Track and obliterate terrorists\u2019 \u2013 Borno State governor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>At least 40 farmers have been killed in an attack on the Kukawa district of Borno state \u2013 residents say there are dozens of people missing, feared killed or abducted by insurgents.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least 40 farmers have been killed in an insurgent attack on the Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State in Nigeria\u2019s northeast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Survivors said the attack began at about 11am on Sunday, January 12, in a farming community within the Doron Baga ward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dozens of farmers are missing. Witnesses said everyone ran for safety when they heard gunshots: \u201cThey could still be hiding in the bushes or they might have been abducted. Insurgents could have killed them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The affected farmers are from villages surrounding the Doron Baga communities, including Tumbul Leda, Dapchari, Yobe, Dumba and Kwatan Turare. Most are migrants from Kebbi, Sokoto, Jigawa, Kano, Monguno, Hadeja and Gwoza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said the insurgents \u2013 thought to be members of the the Jam\u0101\u2019at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da\u2019way Wa\u2019l-Jih\u0101d (JAS), more commonly referred to as Boko Haram \u2013 initially assured the farmers that they would not be harmed and encouraged them to continue their farming activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAfter at first reassuring them, the insurgents lined up the farmers in rows of 10 in the Tumbul Leda area, separating the elderly, youths and women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll those killed were young men. The death toll has now reached at least 42, but I believe the number might be higher as the figures are yet to be fully compiled,\u201d the resident said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said the attack took place far from areas where security operatives are stationed, allowing the insurgents to carry out the killings until about 4pm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Survivors of the attack alerted residents in safer locations. Security operatives still had not arrived at the scene at the time of reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo insurgents were captured during or after the attack,\u201d the resident said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is the first time such an incident has occurred here. We have never had an attack like this. The farmers were busy tending to their crops. They grow beans to sell and for their families to eat. It is their only means of making a living.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babagana Umara Zulum, the governor of Borno State, strongly condemned the attack and called on the officers and men of Operation Hadin Kai \u201cto track and obliterate insurgent elements operating in Doron Baga ward and other enclaves within the Lake Chad region\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zulum expressed his sincere condolences to the victims\u2019 families and assured the public that efforts would be made to locate and reunite the missing individuals with their loved ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith deep sorrow and anguish, I received the sad news of the attack on Dumba where scores of our farmers and fishermen were killed by the terrorists. On behalf of the government, I sympathise with the victims\u2019 families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLet me assure the citizens of Borno that this matter will be thoroughly investigated for further necessary action.
