{"id":53242,"date":"2025-01-16T13:01:58","date_gmt":"2025-01-16T12:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ndarason.com\/en\/?p=53242"},"modified":"2025-01-16T13:01:58","modified_gmt":"2025-01-16T12:01:58","slug":"borno-state-insurgents-abduct-36-wood-collectors-in-konduga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ndarason.com\/en\/borno-state-insurgents-abduct-36-wood-collectors-in-konduga\/","title":{"rendered":"Borno State: Insurgents abduct 36 wood collectors in Konduga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>\u2018Five insurgents with sophisticated weapons surrounded us and tied our hands and legs \u2013 I thought it was my last day when I saw them, I was convinced I was going to die\u2019.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All 36 wood collectors abducted by armed men on Friday, January 10, in the Konduga Local Government Area of Borno state have been released and are back home with their families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residents told RNI that the attackers \u2013 thought to be members of the Jam\u0101\u2019at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da\u2019way Wa\u2019l-Jih\u0101d (JAS), more commonly referred to as Boko Haram \u2013 released 19 people, including children and the elderly, soon after the abduction. The remaining 17 were released later after a ransom of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u20a6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">300,000 was paid for each captive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alhaji Aja Abba, a survivor, said: \u201cThe insurgents abducted us on our way home from the bush where we were fetching wood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFive insurgents with sophisticated weapons surrounded us and tied our hands and legs. I thought it was my last day when I saw them. I was convinced I was going to die.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe insurgents released 19 children and elderly people and told them to return home and inform the families of those being held captive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe captors released 15 of us on Saturday after our families and community members paid the ransom. They released the two remaining captives on Sunday after their families had settled the ransom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibrahim Alhaji Lawan, a Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) member based in Konduga, confirmed the abduction and revealed that the attackers disguised themselves as farmers desperately looking for water to quench their thirst.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen the wood collectors tried to help them, they surrounded all of them and abducted them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe initial report we received was that 36 people had been abducted. Later, 19 captives were released. The remaining captives were released after the ransom of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u20a6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">300,000 each was paid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lawan said when they received the report, they could not go after the kidnappers because of a possible trap in the bush.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said local security operatives were extremely worried about the escalation in the number of insurgent attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHonestly, I am worried about the recent escalation. In the past few months, the situation improved. But these days, we are witnessing frequent attacks on residents and security operatives.
