{"id":53306,"date":"2025-02-25T15:44:28","date_gmt":"2025-02-25T14:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ndarason.com\/en\/?p=53306"},"modified":"2025-02-25T18:25:58","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T17:25:58","slug":"hugs-and-tears-of-joy-as-refugees-reunite-with-their-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ndarason.com\/en\/hugs-and-tears-of-joy-as-refugees-reunite-with-their-families\/","title":{"rendered":"Hugs and tears of joy as refugees reunite with their families"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>More than 200 Nigerians who have been taking refuge in a camp in Chad have been reunited with their families after years of separation \u2013 many for more than a decade.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 200 Nigerian refugees have been reunited with their families and relatives in Borno State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The refugees were repatriated from the Chad Republic on February 6.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many fled from their ancestral hometowns during the Boko Haram insurgency. Some have lived in refugee camps in Chad for more than 10 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week hundreds of them were reunited with their families in Borno State in Nigeria\u2019s northeast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tears of Joy<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I saw my children, I wept out of joy,\u201d Jamila Ali told Ndarason. \u201cI haven\u2019t seen my family, especially my children, for almost six years \u2013 until now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was so wonderful to see them in person. When I laid eyes on them, I was very excited. I can\u2019t tell you how special it was to hold them in my arms and hug them again. I\u2019m back home now and all I want is for us to continue to live together in peace and happiness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jamila Ali is one of thousands of Nigerians who have been living in the Dar Es Salam refugee camp in Chad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She had fled from Doron Baga in the Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State to escape repeated deadly raids by the members of the insurgent group, the Jam\u0101\u2019at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da\u2019way Wa\u2019l-Jih\u0101d (JAS), more commonly referred to as Boko Haram, and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hope for safe, secure and sustainable resettlement<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mustapha Mohammed, a former refugee who recently returned to Doron Baga, was reunited with his family after more than a decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was so excited to see my brother and uncle. We have been separated for about 10 years. I\u2019m very happy to see them again,\u201d he told RNI. \u201cI really appreciate the efforts of the government to repatriate and resettle refugees in their hometowns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI just hope that there will be adequate security to ensure our lives and property will be protected.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In touch in person<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his three years of refuge in Chad, Mustapha Bagoni kept in contact with his family in Baga town by telephone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven though international calls are very expensive, I used to phone my family regularly. I can\u2019t tell you how happy I am to see them again. To see them in person is what I have been thinking about for all these years.
