{"id":53790,"date":"2025-11-17T22:22:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T21:22:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ndarason.com\/en\/?p=53790"},"modified":"2025-11-18T08:02:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T07:02:21","slug":"fresh-wave-of-insecurity-as-iswap-ambush-landmine-blast-and-school-abductions-shake-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ndarason.com\/en\/fresh-wave-of-insecurity-as-iswap-ambush-landmine-blast-and-school-abductions-shake-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Fresh Wave of Insecurity as ISWAP Ambush, Landmine Blast and School Abductions Shake Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\">Nigeria witnessed a series of violent attacks across multiple states between 14 and 17 November 2025, reflecting the widening reach of insurgent and armed groups in both the northeast and northwest regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">ISWAP Ambush on Borno Highway<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">On <\/span><span class=\"s1\">14 November 2025<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) ambushed a Nigerian military convoy along the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Damboa\u2013Biu road<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, near <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Wajiroko<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State Northeast Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">A Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) member, who requested anonymity due to security concerns, told <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Ndarason<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> that the attackers opened fire on the convoy, killing <\/span><span class=\"s1\">two soldiers<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">two CJTF members<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. At least <\/span><span class=\"s1\">seven security personnel were initially missing<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, including <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Brigadier General M. Uba<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, the senior commander overseeing operations in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cOne of those missing later returned, and we are still hoping the others come back safely,\u201d the CJTF member said. He added that the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Damboa\u2013Biu road has remained unsafe<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> for months. \u201cWe are now making preparations to ensure such incidents do not occur again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Army Confirms Deaths, Denies Commander Missing \u2014 Until Image Emerges<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Nigerian Army<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, in a statement issued on <\/span><span class=\"s1\">15 November<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, confirmed the deaths of two soldiers and two CJTF operatives but dismissed reports that Brigadier General Uba was among the missing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">However, by <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Monday, 17 November<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, ISWAP released an Arabic statement through its propaganda outlet <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Amaq<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, claiming it had <\/span><span class=\"s1\">captured and executed<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> the senior officer after interrogation. The faction also circulated a collage with a photo of General Uba in his office beside another image purportedly showing him after his capture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The group alleged that its fighters brought down the officer during the ambush and captured him after he attempted to flee the attack near Wajirko. ISWAP said that once it received information that the commander had escaped, a team of its fighters launched a search and apprehended him in a nearby village, where he was already wounded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The circulated image shows his camouflage trousers stained with blood around the legs. Uba in his office, alongside another showing him after his capture by ISWAP.Photo credit: Premium times<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The Army has yet to issue an updated public statement in response to the new evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">UNIMAID Professor Abducted on Gwoza Road<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">In a separate incident, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Professor Dani Mamman<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, a senior academic in the Department of Islamic Studies at the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">University of Maiduguri<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and former chairman of ASUU (UNIMAID branch), was <\/span><span class=\"s1\">abducted<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> on <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Friday, 14 November<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, along the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Madagali\u2013Gwoza axis<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">He was returning from an ASUU zonal meeting in Yola when suspected Boko Haram insurgents ambushed his vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">A family member told Ndarason that his phone went off around 9 a.m, and after frantic efforts, it was confirmed that he had been taken by insurgents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cBeyond confirming his abduction, we have heard nothing. We are calling on the government to act urgently because the situation is beyond our capacity,\u201d the family member said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Attempts by Ndarason to reach officials of the Department of Islamic Studies and the UNIMAID ASUU branch for updates were unsuccessful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Landmine Blast Kills Hunter, Injures Others in Gwoza<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Early on <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Sunday 16th of November 2025<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, a <\/span><span class=\"s1\">landmine explosion<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Gwoza Local Government Area<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> of Borno State Northeast Nigeria claimed the life of a local hunter and wounded several other residents who were heading to their farms. Security sources believe the device was planted by Boko Haram\/ISWAP fighters, who often booby-trap routes used by civilians and security personnel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Bandits Kill Vice-Principal, Abduct 25 Students in Kebbi<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">In the northwest, armed bandits attacked the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS)<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Maga<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Danko Wasagu Local Government Area of <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Kebbi State<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, at around <\/span><span class=\"s1\">5 a.m. on Monday, 17 November 2025<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The attackers killed the Vice-Principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku, and abducted 25 female students. Maga has faced repeated attacks in recent months, heightening concerns about school security and the vulnerability of rural communities.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, condemned the attack, calling it unacceptable and urging security agencies to move quickly and work together to locate the missing students. He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had directed security structures in the state to launch immediate rescue efforts to ensure the girls are recovered unharmed.
