Nigerian military kills 54 terrorists, rescues over 400 victims – DHQ. Source: Premium Times
The Defence Headquarters says troops of the armed forces have in the last two weeks rescued 468 kidnapped victims and eliminated 54 terrorists in various operations across the North-east, North-central and North-west regions. The Director, Defence Media Operations, Musa Danmadami, said this on Thursday in Abuja at the bi-weekly news conference on the operations of the armed forces.

The Kaduna State commissioner for internal security and home affairs, Samuel Aruwan, has said about 1,052 people were killed, 4,227 abducted and 648 were injured in 2022. Mr Aruwan said this Wednesday during the presentation of a report on the state of insecurity in the state for 2022. The report, titled “The Security Situation in Kaduna State from 1 January to 31 December, 2022,” covered security issues ranging from banditry and terrorism, kidnapping, rape perpetrated by armed bandits, cattle rustling, communal and inter- ethnic clashes, violent attacks, and reprisal attacks.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), Abuja, has disclosed that troops in the frontline have killed 24 terrorists in the North East, while 501 surrendered with their families in the last two weeks. Troops also reportedly arrested no fewer than 40 in the week under review.

Troops of Sector 3 Multi national Joint Task Force (MNJTF Nigeria) on 10 April 2023 rescued a 7 year old girl, Yakura Jalori who was kidnapped by suspected BH/ISWAP terrorists who demanded for ransom for her release. The troops who were on a fighting patrol engaged the terrorists and neutralized 3 of them and rescued the girl. They also recovered from the terrorists the sum of Fifty Four Thousand, One Hundred and Four Naira (#54,104. 00), one AK 47 rifle, one AK 47 rifle magazine and 4 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.

Some terrorists, locally dubbed as bandits, have reportedly killed a community leader and abducted several residents during a fresh attack in Unguwan Liman community in Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The eight female students of Government Secondary School, Awon – who were kidnapped by terrorists on Monday 3rd April 2023 in the Awon general area of Kachia LGA – have escaped from the terrorists’ den. The students, according to preliminary briefings, escaped from a thick forest around the Kaduna – Niger interstate boundaries, and walked for days before arriving at a location (kept undisclosed for security reasons) where they were harboured. Human intelligence sources subsequently alerted the Kaduna State Government for immediate evacuation.

Nigerians have again been thrown into fear following the resurgence of kidnapping in parts of the country following the lifting of the ban on old naira notes. During the financial squeeze, cases of banditry and kidnapping went down. But that has since changed since the Central Bank of Nigeria complied with the Supreme Court directive to release money into the system. Following the development, no fewer than12 residents of Grow Homes Estate, along Kuchibiyi in the Kubwa area of Federal Capital Territory were kidnapped by gunmen, few days ago.

Terrorists in the Birnin Magaji area of Zamfara State have vowed to continue attacking local communities in the area until a unit of soldiers stationed in the area is withdrawn, residents told PREMIUM TIMES Wednesday morning. PREMIUM TIMES spoke to four residents from Birnin Magaji, Mazauda, Nasarawa Mai layi and Gidan Kane communities on the recent attacks that led to the death of 16 people. Several others were wounded during the attack.

The Kaduna State government has said 214 people were killed between January and March this year in attacks by bandits and terrorists, communal clashes, violent attacks, and reprisals. It said the 214 victims comprised of 14 females, 196 males, and four minors across the three senatorial districts. It also said 746 others were kidnapped within the period.

The vaccine- R21/Matrix-M, is developed by the University of Oxford and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India. The Director General of Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mojisola Adeyeye, announced the development on Monday in Abuja.

The Federal University of Technology Akure, (FUTA) said collaborative research between its Laboratory for Geoecology and Sustainable Food System, GeoLab, and Biospheric Scientific Nigeria Limited, BioSci, has come up with a sustainable climate-smart goat/sheep farming. The outcome of the research titled: “Unlocking the Potentials of Indigenous Goats and Sheep Using Climate Smart Agriculture Innovations,” is a specially bred “FUTASA goats and sheep,” it said. The university said meat derived from the breeds is the healthiest of all red meats, having low fat, calories, low cholesterol, and high in protein.
