Military airstrikes targeting insurgents’ positions in Borno State, northeast, Nigeria have reportedly killed an undisclosed number of civilians on Sunday, December 14. The airstrikes, launched between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the Mararaba area of Kukawa Local Government Area, hit a junction where fishermen and commercial drivers were gathered, conveying fish products to their destinations.
Three casualties have been confirmed, with 10 vehicles destroyed. However, the exact number of civilian casualties remains uncertain, with reports suggesting a higher toll. Some injured individuals have been taken to the General Hospital in Monguno for treatment.
The incident occurred just hours after the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) vowed to protect civilian populations in its ongoing operations, supported by the United States. The Air Force has yet to issue a statement about the incident.
The airstrikes have raised concerns about civilian safety and the effectiveness of military operations in the region. Local residents are calling for independent investigations, compensation for victims’ families, and stronger mechanisms to prevent future civilian harm.
