Two Attacks in Less Than a Month Leave Kaleri Residents in Fear:
Insurgents Kill a 12-Year-Old Boy and a Security Operative
Kaleri, a community adjacent to the University of Maiduguri, has been raided twice by insurgents in less than a month, sparking concerns about safety and security. Residents say they are living in fear, waiting for the next attack.
The Attacks
Heavily armed men, suspected of being Boko Haram fighters, attacked the community on Wednesday, February 26, and Tuesday, March 18. The first attack led to the abduction of two people, while the second attack resulted in the deaths of a 12-year-old boy and a local security operative.
Residents reported that the insurgents looted food supplies and valuable possessions while firing indiscriminately. Many were forced to flee in the middle of the night.
Deteriorating Security Situation
Hajja Halima, a resident, described the situation as “extremely alarming.” She said many people have already fled, while others remain because they have no place to go.
Impact on Religious Practices
Since the attacks, there has been a noticeable drop in attendance at night prayers. Worshippers fear venturing out to mosques, leading many to pray at home.
Security Measures at the Mosque
Despite the attacks, some people still attend night prayers. The mosque committee has implemented security measures, including vigilante patrols stationed at strategic locations.
Expansion of the Buffer Zone
Community leaders are urging the Borno State government to review security strategies. They point to military trenches near the community that allow insurgents to hide and the lack of streetlights, which makes night attacks easier.
Local Security Measures
To support military efforts, residents have formed vigilante groups, hoping for improved security through collaboration with official security forces.
A Disturbing Signal
A security operative raised concerns that Kaleri may not be the primary target, given its proximity to the University of Maiduguri, which has been attacked before.
Security Checks Resume
In response, security checks have intensified at the university. Students must present identification before being granted access.
