The Ambassador of Switzerland to Nigeria, Mr. Patrick Egloff, has pledged his country’s support for post-conflict recovery efforts in Borno State. During a meeting with Governor Babagana Umara Zulum at the Government House in Maiduguri, Ambassador Egloff commended the Governor’s leadership qualities, describing them as citizen-focused and inspiring.

“The leadership you provide is extremely important. Your style of governance, with its proximity to the citizens, is very much in line with European models,” Mr Egloff said. He expressed his country’s willingness to support the Borno Model, a locally developed initiative focused on the demobilization, deradicalization, and reintegration of repentant insurgents.

Ambassador Egloff’s visit to Borno State marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between Switzerland and Nigeria. “We are committed to supporting the people of Borno State in their efforts to rebuild and recover from the devastating effects of the insurgency,” he emphasized.

The Ambassador’s commitment is in line with Switzerland’s humanitarian efforts in Nigeria, including the provision of aid during the 2024 devastating floods that affected Maiduguri and surrounding local governments. Governor Zulum had expressed gratitude for the Swiss government’s support and emphasized the need to scale up funding and collaboration in key areas, particularly in supporting victims of insurgency and mediation efforts.

The meeting between the Ambassador and the Governor underscores the importance of international cooperation in promoting peace and stability in the region. With Borno State gradually making progress in reducing the insurgency, the Swiss government’s support will go a long way in enhancing the state’s recovery efforts.
