The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, says the Air Component of the military special task force, “Operation Hadin Kai’’, has continued to decimate terrorists and their hideouts at Tumbuns near Lake Chad.

NAF’s Director, Public Relations and Information, AVM Edward Gabkwet, stated on Monday in Abuja that intelligence report received made airstrikes on a location Northwest of Arina Woje in Tumbuns on Sunday imperative.

He explained that the report indicated the presence of terrorists’ hideouts at the location.

He added that the report also confirmed an activation of terrorists’ activities around clusters of structures concealed under trees near the location.

Two Boko Haram commanders surrender to military task force in Borno / msn.com

Two Boko Haram commanders, Ibrahim Muhammed and Auwal Muhammed, alias “Wanka’’, have surrendered to troops of Sector 3 of the Multinational Joint Task Force, MNJTF, in Monguno, Borno State.

Chief of Military Public Information of the MNJTF, Lt.-Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, revealed this on Tuesday, saying that the two insurgents escaped from the Kwalaram/Bakura Buduma camps after fighting for more than a decade.

Parents of more than 130 Nigerian schoolchildren who were rescued after more than two weeks in captivity said they saw them on Wednesday and that they couldn’t hold back tears of joy during the long-awaited reunion.

The meeting, three days after the children were freed, took place at a government facility in the city of Kaduna, where the children are staying while receiving medical support, the parents and a teacher told The Associated Press.

The parents said they cried and danced as they hugged their children for the first time since March 7, when motorcycle-riding gunmen seized them from their school in the remote town of Kuriga in the northwestern Kaduna state, and forced them to march to nearby forests amid gunfire.

The detainees were arrested by the military in the heat of insurgency.

A Nigerian court on Tuesday sentenced a Chinese national to death after finding him guilty of killing his girlfriend, a government official told The Associated Press, vowing to recommend execution if he unsuccessfully appeals the ruling.

Frank Geng-Quangrong was convicted by a local court in northern Nigeria’s economic hub of Kano state, Kano Justice Commissioner Haruna Dederi said. Geng-Quangrong had pleaded not guilty.

“This is a signal that whoever is coming to a society should be prepared to comply with the extant laws of that society,” Dederi said.

Troops of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army have eliminated five Boko Haram terrorists in a recent clearance operation in North Eastern Nigeria.

The troops under operation Desert Sanity lll also rescued 78 women and girls who were taken as hostages by the terrorists.

This was disclosed in a statement by Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, army spokesman on Saturday.

The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has called for the revitalisation of two irrigation projects in his state to improve food security in the country.

On Sunday the central African nation’s Constitutional Council announced the list which showed that outspoken opposition figures Nassour Ibrahim Neguy Koursami and Rakhis Ahmat Saleh would be barred from contesting the elections. “Their applications had been rejected because they included “irregularities” the council’s statement said.

It is the first time in Chad’s history that a president and a prime minister will face each other in a presidential poll whose first round of voting will take place May 6 and with a provisional second round scheduled to take place June 22.

More than 130 children abducted more than two weeks ago from their school in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Kaduna were rescued Sunday and are getting psychological support before being returned to their families, the West African nation’s military and government officials said.

School authorities had told the state government that a total of 287 students were kidnapped when motorcycle-riding gunmen invaded the remote Kuriga school March 7. However, Kaduna Gov. Uba Sani told local media late Sunday that only 137 young people had been abducted during the attack.

“All of them have come back home safely,” the governor said in a broadcast by the Lagos-based Channels Television. The Associated Press could not reach villagers or school authorities in Kuriga town, which does not have cellphone service.

Hon. Ali Mohammed Kauji, the chairman of Damboa Local Government, who presided over the reopening ceremony said, the market known for its size and convenience, allows customers to drive in, conduct business, and leave with ease.

According to a statement by his media team, since its relocation in 1999, the market has been a vital economic hub for Damboa and surrounding areas.

Prior to the insurgency, the market bustled with activity, attracting traders not only from Borno state but also neighboring Adamawa, Yobe, Gombe, and even Kano states.

He said weekly turnovers reportedly reached billions of naira.

More than a dozen relatives were killed Nov. 5 when security forces attacked with mounted pickup trucks, guns and drones, he told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, for fear of retaliation. He said he hid for hours in a neighbour’s compound and took a series of photos before fleeing the next morning.

There was a flow of tears from relatives as the bodies of the 17 soldiers and officers of the Nigerian Army, who were killed by irate youths at Okuama Community of Delta State on March 14, 2024 arrived in Abuja for burial.

Daily Trust had reported how the troops of 181 Amphibious Battalion, Bomadi, Delta State, were killed while on a peace mission to the Okuama community.

The incident occurred when the troops responded to a distress call after the communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State.

The remains of the military personnel arrived at the National Military Cemetery, Abuja, at about 2:26pm on Wednesday.

The Defence Headquarters, DHQ, said the troops of Operation Hadarin Daji rescued 16 pupils (Almajiris) and a woman abducted by terrorists on March 9 in Gada Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

This is contained in a statement by the director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, on Saturday in Abuja.

Mr Buba said the hostages were rescued on Thursday by the military in collaboration with local authorities and government agencies across the country, in a coordinated search and rescue operation.

US says it has not received a formal request by Niger junta to leave military bases / africanews.com

A top Pentagon official told Congress on Thursday that the U.S. has not received a formal request from Niger’s junta to depart the country, saying it has received mixed signals on whether the hundreds of U.S. troops there are no longer welcome.

Celeste Wallander, assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, told the House Armed Services Committee that so far Niger’s ruling military council, known as the CNSP, has not formally asked the U.S. military to leave.

Wallander said the CNSP has said the status of forces agreement, which sets the terms of a U.S. military presence in a country, is now null and void. However, she said the junta has “assured us that American military forces are protected and they will take no action that will endanger them.”

An advocacy group, Joint Action for Good Governance, JAGG, has urged the National Assembly not to consider creation of state police in the ongoing amendment of the constitution.

The national vice-president of JAGG, Abdulwaheed Odunuga, expressed the view in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos.

He said the National Assembly should rather concentrate on how to strengthen the capacity of the federal police to deliver the much-expected security.

Mr Odunuga said that if created, state police would be abused and manipulated by state politicians.

Tukur Mamu gives FG 7 days to withdraw terrorism financing allegations  / yen.ng

Tukur Mamu, the chief executive officer and publisher of Desert Herald, has given the federal government a seven-day ultimatum to retract allegations of terrorism financing against him.

He gave the order through his lawyer in a letter dated March 25, addressed to the attorney-general of the federation, AGF.

In the letter, Mamu, who is still in detention, said no competent court of law has found him guilty of terrorism financing.

He said upon expiration of the ultimatum, he will seek redress in court.

In the petition dated 24 March and addressed to Mr Egbetokun through the Complaint Response Unit of the police, Mr Gwamnishu urged the police chief to wade into the matter and bring the perpetrators to the book.

The activist, in the petition, which he forwarded to PREMIUM TIMES, wants the inspector general of police to ensure the refund of the extorted money to the victim, whom he identified as Ekene Onyeogulu.

As many as 2.2 billion people still live without access to safe drinking water and 3.5 billion lack access to decent sanitation, according to a new United Nations report published on World Water Day.

“I think the situation is really challenging,” said Li Lifeng, Director of FAO’s Land and Water Division in Rome.

The UN report “Water for prosperity and peace” highlights that tensions over water are exacerbating conflicts worldwide. “(We) say without water, there’s no life. Then without the water, there’s no food. So water is the core, is the indispensable natural resources for sustainable development, for agriculture, for many different economic sectors.”

More than a million people in Chad, including refugees, face losing access to lifesaving aid unless more funding is raised to help, the U.N. World Food Program said this month.

The devastating conflict between feuding generals in Sudan has killed more than 5,000 people there and displaced over 5 million, the United Nations said. In Chad, refugee numbers are at a 20-year high. Hanatu Hamman, mother of Late Lance Corporal Peter Hamman, one of the 17 troops of the Nigerian Army, who was killed in Delta State, says her son was planning to get married.

The military personnel were killed by irate youths during a communal clash over a land dispute.

According to the report, the personnel attached to the 181 Amphibious Battalion in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta, were responding to a distress call when they were ambushed and killed.

After the killing, there were reports that the military was planning a reprisal on the communities involved.

However, denying the allegation, the Defence headquarters slammed the community and stressed that no amount of propaganda would stop culprits from being nabbed.

The death toll from Sunday’s Bauchi alms-giving stampede rises to seven, the police in the state said on Monday.

The Spokesperson of the command, SP Ahmed Wakil, said that three more women died.

Four people were reportedly trampled to death on Sunday during an attempt to participate in an almsgiving exercise at Shafa Holdings Company Plc on Jos Road in Bauchi, Bauchi State.

The police said that the incident happened at about 10.20am when the company was holding its annual Zakat exercise, otherwise known as almsgiving, to help the less-privileged in the state.

The sunrise over Zabarmari village was beautiful in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State, but it offered no comfort to Fatima Sani, a 22-year-old woman in labour.

Fatima had done everything right. She attended prenatal care and knew when her baby was due. Sadly, she never expected to travel 20 kilometres for delivery, passing three closed health centres along the way.

While relatives mourned and cried, Fatima’s sister-in-law, Aisha Mustapha, a 28-year-old resident of Zabarmari, through tears, shared the heartbreaking news of their “journey for a safe delivery ending in a devastating stillbirth”.

Households across all continents wasted over 1 billion meals a day in 2022, while 783 million people were affected by hunger and a third of humanity faced food insecurity, says a UN report.

The report, titled UN Food Waste Index Report 2024, was released on Wednesday by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) ahead of the International Day of Zero Waste.

The report said food waste continued to hurt the global economy and fuel climate change, nature loss, and pollution.

President Bola Tinubu has awarded posthumous national honours to the 17 soldiers killed in Okuama community in Delta State about two weeks ago.

The president also promised scholarships and houses to the families of the military personnel.

President Tinubu announced the gesture on Tuesday during the burial of the slain military personnel at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja.

The soldiers are A. Ali, a lieutenant colonel and commander of the team; SD Shafa and DE Obi, both majors; and U Zakari, a captain.

The others are Yahaya Saidu, a staff sergeant; Danbaba Yahaya and Kabir Bashir, both corporals; Abdullahi Ibrahim, Bulus Haruna, Sole Opeyemi and Bello Anas, all lance corporals.

Nigeria’s public debt stock increased from N87.91 trillion (114.35 billion dollars ) in the third quarter of 2023 to N97.34 trillion (108.23 billion dollars ) in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said this on Tuesday in its Nigerian Domestic and Foreign Debt Report for Q4 2023 released in Abuja.

The report said Nigeria’s public debt stock, which included external and domestic debt, grew by 10.73 per cent on a quarter on a quarter basis.

Analysts: Nigeria’s Dangote Oil Refinery Could Accelerate European Sector’s Decline / voaafrica.com

Nigeria’s giant Dangote oil refinery could bring to an end a decades-long gasoline trade from Europe to Africa worth $17 billion a year, heaping pressure on European refineries already at risk of closure from heightened competition, analysts and traders said.

The refinery started production in January and cost $20 billion to build. It can refine up to 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) and will be the largest in Africa and Europe when it reaches full capacity this or next year.

It has long been touted as the turning point for Nigeria’s quest for energy independence. Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation and its top oil producer, yet it imports almost all its fuel due to lack of refining capacity.

About a third of Europe’s 1.33 million bpd average gasoline exports in 2023 went to West Africa, a bigger chunk than any other region, with the majority of those exports ending up in Nigeria, Kpler data shows.

Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum, has commended the African Development Bank, AfDB, for implementing 65.75 million dollars Inclusive Basic Service Delivery and Livelihood Empowerment Integrated Programme, IBSDLEIP, in the state.

Mr Zulum said this when he visited the Director-General, Nigeria Country Department of AfDB, Lamin Barrow, in Abuja.

According to the governor, the programme will ameliorate the effects of insurgency in the state.

The programme is aimed at improving the people’s quality of life by increasing access of the internally displaced population to basic social services.

The Monetary Policy Committee, MPC, of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has raised the benchmark interest rate to 24.75 percent.

According to a communique issued on Tuesday by the CBN governor, Yemi Cardoso, after the MPC meeting in Abuja, the new interest rate is a hike from the 22.75 percent announced by the MPC about a month ago.

Gov. Zulum flags off construction of N7.9b flyover / yen.ng

Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum has flagged off the construction of a new flyover in Maiduguri.

The flagging off ceremony was held this morning at the site of the project at Baga Road Roundabout, which commonly known among locals as West-end Roundabout (taken out of Western Union).

Mustapha Gubio, Borno’s works commissioner who conducted the governor, said the size of the flyover is about half a kilometer in total, with three outlets.

‘The contract for the project was signed last week,’ he said.
