Six more farmers have been beheaded by insurgents after they ventured into a nearby forest on the outskirts of Damboa town. They were buried on Tuesday morning.

Troops of the Nigerian Army have raided camps suspected to belong to unrepentant militants and illegal oil bunkerers in Bayelsa creeks and captured an armoury. Mr Nwachukwu, a brigadier general, said the operation was undertaken by troops of 5 Battalion operating under 16 Brigade on Sunday, at Azuzuama Community in Ijaw South Local Government Area of Bayelsa. He said the troops subdued the suspected militants during the operation with superior firepower and compelled them to abandon their camp in disarray.

We can recall the activities of the lawless kids of Maiduguri over a decade ago, which had then influenced my article, “Killing in the Name of the Devils” (https://yashuaib.com/2006/03/killing-in-the-name-of-the-devil/), in 2006, when they killed and destroyed the assets of non-indigenes and others in the city over flimsy excuses which triggered reprisal attacks somewhere else. Today, Borno State, with Maiduguri as capital, is regarded as the epicentre of terrorism in Nigeria.

Troops of Operation Hadarin Daji deployed in Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara state rescued about 20 kidnapped victims on 27 June 2023 while on their routine patrol in the general area. The victims who comprised 2 females, 3 children and 15 males including the elderly males were kidnapped from different parts of Zamfara state.

In Chad, the transitional prime minister, Saleh Kebzabo, addressed the diplomatic corps accredited to Chad on Saturday. The objective is to take stock of the humanitarian situation in the east of the country, and seek the support and assistance of technical and financial partners to enable it to cope with the influx of Sudanese refugees on its territory.

Two charcoal makers have been found beheaded in a forest 15km from Damboa town in Borno State. It is suspected the internally displaced persons were slain by members of the Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’way Wa’l-Jihād (JAS), more commonly known as Boko Haram.

The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, said 40,000 specially trained elite officers would be deployed to the newly created Special Intervention Squad of the Nigeria Police. Mr Egbetokun said this on Monday in Abuja at a conference with Commanders of the Police Mobile Force (PMF), Special Protection Unit (SPU) and other tactical units. He said the squad would consist of selected officers from the pool of existing PMF personnel and other tactical units.

A recent raid by Nigerian Army troops on a ‘baby-making’ factory in Abia State highlights the country’s rising child trafficking and child labour crisis. But the federal and state governments are characteristically inattentive to the burden. Reports across the country indicate that children are being subjected to various forms of child labour, including commercial sexual exploitation and use in armed conflict, quarrying, and artisanal mining. The authorities should rouse from their slumber and tackle this burgeoning crisis before it worsens to uncontrollable proportions.
