The Force Commander, Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Major General Gold Chibuisi, has charged troops to maintain an aggressive posture towards achieving the mandate of the Taskforce. He made the charge on Wednesday in Mallam-Fatori and Diffa in Nigeria and Niger Republic respectively during an operation visit to Sectors 3 and 4.

The Nigerian Air Force has finally taken responsibility for the deadly airstrike on Kwatiri, a rural community in Nasarawa State, North-central Nigeria, after months of uncertainties about the identities of the attackers, a new report by the Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said. The organisation, which investigates and reports on human rights abuses worldwide, said its investigations confirmed 39 persons were killed and six others injured in the airstrike that occurred on 24 January.

In the last five days, residents of rural communities in both Zamfara and Sokoto states have been at the receiving end of renewed terrorist attacks which survivors say are aimed at forcing the new governors in the states into negotiating with the assailants. On 29 May, new governors were inaugurated in all seven states in the north-west region and Niger State in central Nigeria; the states most affected by banditry.

Bandits have killed two persons and abducted about 30 others, following an attack on communities in Birnin-Gwari Council of Kaduna State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that armed men suspected to be bandits on Saturday launched an attack on the people of six villages in Tangaza LGA of Sokoto State. The attack led to the death of no fewer than 30 persons and left many others injured.

Military troops of Operation Hadarin Daji in Zamfara State have eliminated seven armed bandits. They also recovered some ammunition, and set ablaze two motorcycles of the terrorists. PRNigeria gathered from a credible military source that three of the bandits were killed on Monday, in a clearance operation at Shinkafi local government area of the State.

A Catholic priest has been shot dead in Edo State, South-South Nigeria. The Catholic Archbishop of Benin City, Augustine Akubeze, confirmed the incident in a notice on Thursday to the priests and members of the archdiocese. He said the victim, identified as Charles Igechi, was shot on Wednesday while on his way back to his place of assignment at St. Michael College, Ikhueniro, Edo, where he was serving as vice principal of the college.

It was gathered that the priest was shot by gunmen on Wednesday along the Agbor Road, Ikhueniro area of Benin, on his way to his place of assignment.

Nigeria is 8th most polluted country in the world with 71.80 microgramme (μg) and Nepal most polluted country with 99.73 μg, according to a report published yesterday by Oxford University’s Our World in Data platform and Daily Mail UK. Nigeria, last year, ranked 18th in the list of most polluted countries in the world, with an average of 34 microgrammes per cubic metre of particulate matter concentration.

This represents a 172 percent rise on 2016, the US International Rescue Committee said in its report on the Sahel region. The three countries are facing a deadly jihadist insurgency which began in Mali more than a decade ago, and most of the central Sahel “is highly exposed to changes in climate”, it warned. The report said temperatures are rising 1.5 times faster than the rest of the world with an increase of between two and 4.3 degrees Celsius projected by 2080.

ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) has raised the alarm that the multidimensional Poverty index (2022) report released in November shows that 77.2 million Nigerians are faced with food insecurity, 57.4 million are face with nutrition insecurity and 101.2 million others lack access to cooking fuel which contributes largely to climate change and health issues.

While the world is paying more attention to the war in Ukraine, the majority of neglected humanitarian crises for 2022/2023 were in Africa, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) report. Seven-out-of-10 of the world’s most ignored crises were in Africa, while Colombia, Venezuela, and El Salvador are the three non-African states on the list.

The World Bank has retained Nigeria alongside Afghanistan, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemeh as hotspots of global food security concerns, raising a red flag on the governments’ capacity to weather the storm. It is not the first time Nigeria would feature on the list but the World Bank’s latest Food Security Update says the countries “remain of highest concern for the June to November 2023 outlook”.
