Fear in Damboa local government area in Borno State northeast, Nigeria as Boko Haram/ ISWAP terrorists killed top military officer in an ambush attack yesterday.
The spokesman of the Nigeria Army’s Operation Lafiya Dole, Ado Isa confirmed in a statement the death of D.C Bako a colonel who was also commands an army brigade in Damboa.
Mr Isa added that the colonel died in a military hospital where he was receiving treatment after the ambush.
Radio Ndarason International reporter in Maiduguri, Hadiza Dawud interviewed a resident of Damboa via telephone on the situation of the town after the ambush.
The resident whose identity was concealed due to security reasons said there was a panic and fear in Damboa from the people after receiving the information. He added that, most shops are closed, movements have been restricted, and people are more vigilant and security were sighted busy roaming around.
A member of the Civilian Joint Task Force Ba’a Umaru said the insurgents attacked them while on their way to return to the army base after shelling the terrorist hideout. He added that other six soldiers died in the ambush as well while many injured.
Sympathising with the people and the Nigerian army the Borno state government describe the slain officer as a patriotic Nigerian who is always led front the front.
The incident occurred just a day after the Northern Elders Forum called on the federal government to sack the service chiefs for underperforming in the war against terrorism.
