Brief – Two men, believed to be Nigerian Army soldiers, have been arrested for the killing of Shiekh Goni Aisami, an Islamic cleric, who was shot on Friday, August 19.
RNI reporter Alhaji Sheriff Bura said the cleric was on his way from Gashua to Nguru when one of the suspects asked him for a lift. Reports vary but it was believed the cleric stopped to urinate and when he got back into the car he was shot. The suspect allegedly tried to escape in the cleric’s car but it was stuck in mud. That’s when he called the second suspect.
The two were arrested and taken to Damaturu for investigation. Dungus Abdulkarim, the deputy superintendent of police in Yobe State, told RNI investigations were ongoing. The suspects, John Gabriel and Adamu Gideon, were allegedly members of the recce battalion at Nguru Barracks.
Spokesman Captain Kennedy Anyawu sent the army’s condolences to the cleric’s family.
