Burkina Faso’s junta leader on Tuesday lashed out at the “cowardice” of the country’s jihadist rebels after local and security sources reported at least 10 civilian deaths in two attacks. Residents of Nouna, local capital of Kossi province in the west, contacted by telephone, said shells hit the town late Monday.

The low and erratic rain during the wet season this year has prompted religious leaders and traditional rulers in Borno State to enjoin thousands of farmers and others to pray earnestly to Almighty Allah to intervene to provide steady rainfall, without which is it likely that most crops will die.

Children as young as four years old are among the more than 10 million kids living on the streets in Nigeria. There are many reasons for children living on the streets – particularly in the northeast of the country which has been under siege by insurgents for more than a decade.

Before the closure of official, state-run internally displaced persons’ camps in Maiduguri, women had easy access to sexual and reproductive health services – now they have to deal with unwanted pregnancies and, often, unsafe abortions. Humanitarian organisations used to be on hand to provide advice and care for the women. They discussed unwanted pregnancies, back-street abortions and provided contraception, either pills or injection.

The National Economic Council comprising 36 state governors and Vice President Kashim Shettima has concluded a plan for state governments to implement cash transfer programmes using state-generated social registers. It said states-generated social registers would better reflect the number of vulnerable Nigerians to be reached with such cash transfer or palliative scheme.
