The Borno State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all schools in Lassa, Dille, and Chul communities in Askira-Uba Local Government Area following Monday’s abduction of dozens of students and teachers.
According to officials, 36 students — 25 females and 11 males from SS1, SS2, and SS3 classes — are still missing after the attack on Government Day Secondary School, Lassa. Three teaching staff were also affected, bringing the total number of people impacted to 39.
Troops from Operation Hadin Kai and local vigilante group have earlier rescued 10 other students and teachers from the same incident.
In response to the security breach, Governor Babagana Zulum sent a high-powered delegation to Lassa on Tuesday to assess the situation and meet with affected families. The delegation announced the immediate temporary closure of schools in the three communities as a precautionary measure.
The decision was reached during an emergency stakeholders’ meeting at Government Girls Secondary School, Lassa, convened by the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe. Principals, the Local Government Chairman, security officials, NUT representatives, and community leaders attended the meeting.
Students currently sitting for ongoing examinations will be relocated to Government Secondary School, Uba, to continue without interruption.
Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, the state Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation conveyed the Governor’s sympathy and assured parents that security agencies, in collaboration with the government and community leaders, are working to trace and safely return the abducted students and staff.
“Let me assure you that efforts are ongoing by security agencies, government authorities, community leaders, and other stakeholders to trace and safely reunite the missing students and staff with their families,” he said.
The delegation also briefed the Emir of Uba, Alhaji Aliyu Ibn Samaila Mamza, on the government’s response.
Gambo Adam Gazama, Chairman of the Lassa Development Association, described the incident as deeply saddening for residents of Lassa and Maiduguri. He called for prayers and stronger protection for schools and students.
The Borno State Government stated it remains committed to bolstering security around educational institutions and supporting the families of those affected.
