It is common nowadays to hear about a child missing in Borno State. Often it is reported by social and conventional media organisations in Maiduguri the state’s capital in the northeast, Nigeria.
According to experts, there are many factors that are contributing to the child missing, which include; lack of parental supervision and birth control, and the insecurity which has resulted in nearly three million people being displaced.
Radio Ndarason International reporter in Maiduguri Rukayya Ahmed Alibe found that many parents interviewed point accusing fingers at each other, while the mothers blame the fathers and the fathers blame the mothers for negligence.
Modu Bulama, a father, said that mothers contribute to this happening because they are closer to the children, whereas fathers are responsible to feed the family, noting that mothers these days are not doing enough in looking after the children.
Modu added that, there is need for the mothers to put more effort while upbringing their children’s and for the fathers they should also try as much as possible to provide them with all their needs.
Aisata Ali a mother while responding said, mothers are doing their best, even though sometimes it has become difficult to look after them when the children are many. She added that, some parents (fathers) cannot provide their family with the basic necessities, which prompts mothers to send out their children for hawking, and in the process they go missing.
According to a public affairs analyst this is not the right time to blame each other, noting that looking after children is a collective responsibility.
