Ministry of women affairs in collaboration with northeast region initiative (NERI) have organised a one day sensitisation campaign on Gender Base Violence, particularly rape as the case soars in the north eastern Nigeria nowadays than never before.
The event which took place at Musa Usman Secretariat in Maiduguri aimed at creating more awareness for women and girl child on Gender Base Violence and also to provide them with basic knowledge on how to protect themselves.
Speaking to Radio Ndarason International, Hajja Bawa Goni Kyari the Director Girl Child Affairs of the ministry of Women Affairs expressed worries about the drastic increase in the cases of rape in the northeast region. She added that some she received show how even elderly people have been involved in raping teenagers.
The president Ministry of Women Affairs Hajja Ya’ana Alkali while interacting with our reporter Amina Abbagana encouraged women and girls to always report all rape cases to the nearest police stations and the ministry, noting that the attitude of non-reporting of such cases is one of the major factors affecting the current fight against rape in the region.
She however, urge parents to do the same and feel free to report all cases because the ministry will never reveal the identity of the victims.
According to a legal practitioner, the situation is worsening daily due to the inability of the government to enact a child protection law.
The event was organised just one day after one girl’s marriage, scheduled to take place next month, was cancelled after her ex sent a nude video of her to her fiancé in Sokoto State.
