Brief – Roaming elephants – believed to come from Cameroon – are causing havoc on farmlands in Rann in the Kala-Balge Local Government Area of Borno State, as they trample, eat and destroy cultivated fields.
Farmers told RNI reporter Rukaiya Ahmed Alibe that the elephants were trampling their lands and destroying crops. Many of the farmers had not even bothered to plant anything this year because they knew the elephants would flatten everything.
Modu Mamman Tar, a farmer in Rann, said: “Every year the elephants invade our land and destroy everything. They have been coming here for at least four years and every year we make a loss because of them. We have complained to the authorities. Security officials have told us we may not shoot or harm them. The elephants can destroy huge areas in one day because there are many of them.”
He pleaded with authorities to take action to protect their farmlands and ensure food security.
