The Struggle for Survival

As in many African countries, schools remain closed in Borno State, northeast, Nigeria for over six month as part of measures to contain the spread of Coronavirus in the country.

The closure has greatly impacted on the livelihoods of many private school teachers who solely depend on the salaries they received, but due to the closure, there is no salary for almost six months.

One of them is Suleman Mohammed a teacher at Amina Memorial Integrated School in Maiduguri. Speaking to Radio Ndarason International said, he is married man four children, added that, apart the month salary that he used to collect at the end of the month, he has no any other means of earning.

He added that, COVID-19 has affected him greatly and it has made him collect loans from people before, but he can hardly get loans from people these days.

Mohammed said, he later decided to go back to his previous work which is repairing of bicycles, he is now happy and doing well economically.

He advised his other colleagues who remain idle waiting schools to resume to embrace skills to support their families.

Bukar Brah, a private school teacher in Jere Local Government Area in Borno State, currently suffering from financial problems after the school closure caused by COVID-19 pandemic.

He told our reporter that he has no any skill apart from teaching, he added that his friends and family members are supporting financially. He urged government to allow schools to resume and always consider the private schools teachers while giving out palliatives to cushion the COVID-19 hardship.
