Brief – Two museum staff members were killed when insurgents, thought to be members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), attacked the Tukur Yusuf Buratai Institute of War and Peace in Buratai in the Biu Local Government Area of Borno State on Monday, January 10.
A resident, who asked to remain anonymous, told RNI reporter Aisha Jamal that his uncle was one of those killed. He said the insurgents stormed the institute, a research centre of the Nigerian Army University, on Monday night. The museum, which is attached to the institute, contains confiscated weapons from insurgents and other related materials kept for research and history purposes.
He said although there were many insurgents heavily armed with rocket-propelled grenades and anti-aircraft guns, soldiers had repelled them and they did not get into the town.
However, telecommunications were disrupted and the gates of the town remained closed until 1pm on Tuesday.
