Over 20 killed in a fresh attack by Boko Haram/ ISWAP insurgents in the headquarters of Magumeri Local government area in Borno state, Nigeria on Thursday.
An eye witness who wished to remain anonymous told RNI reporter Amina Abbagana that the insurgents arrived in Magumeri town in several vehicles at around 4pm in the evening, and headed straight to the the military base firing heavily. Unusually they also video-taped the attack
Another resident reported that over 20 insurgents were killed and many more escaped injured during the exchange of fire. He added that he believed that the soldiers been warned of the attack 24 hours earlier, and well prepared. The number of soldiers killed or injured is unknown.
However, the attack still went on for three hours. The military destroyed three vehicles brought by the insurgents – two Hilux 2020 and one Toyota V6 Landcruiser. The soldiers applauded the effort of the people to support the military.
On the effort made by the Borno state governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, to bring an end to the insurgency about five hundred soldiers were taken to Magumeri to help restore peace to the region.
Magumeri town is about 40km from Maiduguri, and about 46km from Gubio. The town experienced a series of attacks in the past which led to the displacement of many from the town.
