Brief – At least 25 tents were razed to the ground on Wednesday, July 13, in Fariya Buza camp, a shelter for internally displaced persons (IDPs) on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
No one died or was injured in the fire, but affected residents lost most, if not all, of their possessions.
Falta Usman told RNI reporter Musa Shettima that the fire broke out at about 2.30am. “We lost everything: Our shelter, cooking utensils, food, mattresses and the few clothes we had. We just ran for our lives.”
Bulama Mele said: “We lost everything but we thank God not our lives.”
Other fire victims said they, too, had lost everything, adding that they had received no aid from the government. They pleaded with the authorities for help, saying they were desperate.
