Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have neutralised Boko Haram commander, Abu Hassan, and 13 other terrorists in the Mafa-Dikwa axis of Borno State. Hassan and other fighters were killed after a soldier in the convoy patrolling the border road to Cameroun fired at the terrorists, who were reportedly fleeing. Confirming the incident, yesterday, in Maiduguri, a counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, disclosed that Hassan led a Boko Haram robbery squad before they met their waterloo.

Terrorists suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents have killed 15 female members at Mandara Hills, in the Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State. PUNCH Metro gathered from a military source on Wednesday that the insurgents killed 10 of the victims after accusing them of witchcraft. The five other victims were reportedly killed for attempting to surrender to the military. Speaking with one of our correspondents, the source said the leader of Boko Haram in charge of Mandara Hills, Gwoza General Area and parts of Cameroon, Ali Ngulde, allegedly ordered the killing of the victims.

Not less than 95% of the conflicts in Nigeria including banditry, kidnapping, killings, cattle rustling, and thuggery are carried out by youth and can be attributed to unemployment, poverty, poor education, ActionAid Nigeria has said. Nigeria suffered spate of conflicts and insecurity across the country with almost all states of the federation reeling from one form of conflict or the other, just as the political campaigns for the 2023 general elections were already marred by acts of thuggery as witnessed in Kaduna, Maiduguri and Jos.

The Nigerian government’s proposed change to the design of three of its currency notes has caused a rush to deposit cash in banks. Even the insurgents have begun to review their monetary ‘policy’ by opting to take only CFA for all their transactions. The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has ordered farmers and fishermen in the territories they control around Lake Chad to pay ‘taxes’ in CFA, in response to the Nigerian government’s planned redesign of its currency. In October, the Central Bank of Nigeria announced a plan to change the look of three of the nation’s currency notes (N500, N200 and N100) by the end of Jan. 2023.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor on Wednesday, unveiled the Defence Headquarter (DHQ) joint simulation exercise and the review of ongoing Operation Whirl Punch. PRNigeria reports that Operation Whirl Punch is a DHQ led operation that deals with the menace of banditry and terrorism in Kaduna and Niger States. Irabor said professionalism remained the thrust of the Armed Forces in addressing the prevailing security challenges in the country. He said the simulation exercise was designed to reshape and review the operation in a bid to enhance operational effectiveness of the military.

Kachalla Gudau, a dreaded bandit who commanded a large number of foot soldiers carrying out kidnappings and killings in Chikun, Kachia and Kajuru LGAs, was among the bandits neutralized by troops of the Nigerian Army on Sunday, at Kankomi in Kaduna State. Diligent exploitation of human intelligence networks corroborated other pieces of available intelligence, which confirmed that Gudau was indeed one of those felled by the bullets of the courageous troops as they repelled an attack led by the notorious bandit himself, ending his ignoble reign of brutality and evil.

Troops of the Nigerian Army in the early hours of today at Kankomi, Chikun LGA, repelled an attack by dozens of bandits and subsequently neutralized one of the attackers, while others escaped with gunshot wounds. The Kaduna State Government was informed of the development in feedback, which captured the bravery exhibited by the troops in overpowering the bandits. The attackers made an attempt to infiltrate the location housing the troops. The vigilant troops in response engaged them in a fierce gun duel, which lasted for over an hour. This resulted in the elimination of one of the terrorists, who was wearing military camouflage combat gear, as can be seen in the attached photo. Others escaped with bullet wounds, as evidenced by bloodstains along their withdrawal route.

The act of intelligence gathering and information sharing has proven to be a veritable weapon in the fight against terrorists and terrorism globally. With actionable intelligence at the disposal of security agencies, activities capable of breaching national security can surely be confronted and averted successfully. Nigeria is also not left behind in utilizing intelligence in fighting insecurity. This is achieved through established security organizations that are mandated to carry out such functions. The Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), an organization responsible for gathering intelligence for the military and equally coordinating their operations, is one of such bodies known to perform this vital security role. The recent successes by the Armed Forces of Nigeria against non-state actors across the length of the country are largely attributed to the behind-the-curtain operations of the DIA, in collaboration with other sister security agencies.

The Defence Headquarters on Monday, declared 19 terrorists wanted and placed N5 million bounty on each of them. The details of the 19 terrorists are contained in a poster released by the Director, Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Jimmy Akpor, on Monday in Abuja. The information on the poster revealed that the N5 million cash reward is for anyone who could provide information that could lead to arrest of one wanted terrorist. The wanted persons are notorious bandits/terrorists that have been terrorising Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara States, it said.

Since 2009, Nigerian security forces, especially the military, have been waging a counter-insurgency battle against Boko Haram and the Islamic State of West African Province, ISWAP, terrorists. No thanks to the marauding activities of the two terror groups, the North East region has become another Somalia. Fighters of the deadly sects have not persisted in promoting their ‘Education is Evil’ campaign’. In September, acclaimed Global and International Terrorism Research/Analysis group which speciallizes in collating data on terrorist’s activities worldwide, Jihad Analytics disclosed that Nigeria is the second most attcked and terrorized country in the world, with only Iraq being the first and Syria being the third. The disclosure which was made in its half year report spanning January to June 2022 stated that while Iraq recorded 337 terrorists attacks, Nigeria recorded 305 attacks with Syria coming third following 142 terrorist’s attack’s.

Kidnappers made two raids on communities in Bukuyum, Zamfara state seizing six women and five men. Some of the abducted were recent arrivals to the area, having left their homes fearing they were at risk of being kidnapped there. Armed terrorists launched two kiddapping raids in Bukuyum LGA northwest Nigeria. The raid in Dangurunfa, where six women and two men were seized, happened at about 4:30 a.m. Nov 14. A separate attack in Sadawa village, about six and a half miles away, occurred at 6:00 p.m the same day, where three male villagers were taken. The abductees from Dangurunfa had recently come to live there because they thought it safer. Residents of the area said they are displaced persons who fled their homes in Masama-Mudi and Dargaje communities of Bukuyum LGA to avoid kidnapping.

The Nigerian military eliminated more than 50 terrorists and rescued 50 victims in land and air offensives in the North-east and North-west in the last two weeks, an official has said. The Director of Defence Media Operations at the Defence Headquarters, Musa Danmadami, made this known at a bi-weekly news briefing on the operations of the armed forces on Thursday in Abuja. In the North-east, Mr Danmadami said, the troops of Operation Hadin Kai neutralised 13 terrorists, apprehended 10 and rescued 41 victims in land operations across the theatre during the period.

The Kaduna State Government on Wednesday said Nigerian security forces have killed a dreaded terrorist, Kachalla Gudau. “Mr Gudau, a dreaded bandit who commanded a large number of foot soldiers carrying out kidnappings and killings in Chikun, Kachia and Kajuru local government areas was among the bandits killed by troops of the Nigerian Army on Sunday, at Kankomi in Kaduna State,” said Samuel Aruwan, the state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs.

That is the starting point of a new analysis of the impact of gender issues on food systems around the world, produced in time for the COP27 climate conference in Egypt. As a result, regions where agriculture, food processing and production are mostly carried out by women will be the most affected by climate crises, a report by the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) shows. CGIAR is a platform that amplifies research and fills gaps that have impacts on gender equality and social inclusion in agriculture and food systems.

The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development and PREMIUM TIMES Thursday released a documentary that shows the “loss and damages” due to the recent flooding disaster in Nigeria. At the ongoing United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt, a major agenda being put forward at the negotiation table by the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) including Nigeria is “loss and damage” which emphasises financial compensation for the ravaged nations. This, they say, will help to compensate countries in Africa that contribute less than 3 per cent to the global emission to improve adaptation and mitigation efforts towards coping with the lingering scourge of climate change on the continent.

The federal government has disclosed that 63 percent of persons within Nigeria, 133 million, are living in poverty. The figure was presented during the launch of Nigeria’s Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Survey in Abuja on Thursday. It was conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the National Social Safety-Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI).

A new study has found that climate change severely worsened the heavy rains that caused large-scale flooding across swathes of Nigeria and Niger this year, killing hundreds of people. The floods were recorded as the worst-ever in the two countries. The report by World Weather Attribution says extreme seasonal rainfall and the release of water from dams caused the flooding from June to October. They concluded the event was made 80 times more likely by climate change.

The French humanitarian non-governmental organization, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has sounded an alarm over the possibility of a cholera epidemic in the various camps housing displaced persons from floods in the ninth district of the Chadian capital, N’Djamena. The camps involved are in Walia, Toukra, Ndingangali and Ngueli quarters where the conditions of water, hygiene and sanitation are deplorable, obliging humanitarian workers in the camps to be permanently on the alert for a cholera epidemic.
